The Great Debate: Cloth vs Disposable Diapers

Not really sure who actually debates this besides soon-to-be parents. But, in my current situation in life, I’m debating this. So, naturally, as a money blogger, I decided to do some math and make some fancy charts for this situation.

I chose three different diaper scenarios:

  1. The Honest Company – disposable and for the ‘I don’t want chemicals in my diapers crowd’ (aka, my wife, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
  2. Pampers Swaddlers – disposable
  3. Bumgenius Littles/All-In-One Freetime Diapers – cloth

Scenario 1: The Honest Company

Size of Diaper Number of Diapers Per Day Time in Diaper Total Number of Diapers Cost of Diaper Total Cost
NB 10 1 month (30 days) 300 0.35 $105.00
1 9 2 months (60 Days) 540 0.32 $172.80
2 7 3 months (90 Days) 630 0.35 $220.50
3 6 6 months (180 Days) 1080 0.41 $442.80
Total 2550 $941.10

Scenario 2: Pampers Swaddlers

Size of Diaper Number of Diapers Per Day Time in Diaper Total Number of Diapers Cost of Diaper Total Cost
NB 10 1 month (30 days) 300 0.21 $63.00
1 9 2 months (60 Days) 540 0.25 $135.00
2 7 3 months (90 Days) 630 0.29 $182.70
3 6 6 months (180 Days) 1080 0.33 $356.40
Total 2550 $737.10

Scenario 3: Bumgenius Littles (NB) and All-In-One Cloth Freetime (1-3)

Size of Diaper Number of Diapers In Size Cost of Diaper Total Cost
NB 24 14.95 $358.80
1-3 24 19.95 $478.80
Total $837.60

Clearly the cloth diaper chart doesn’t include the special detergent you have to buy and the increase in your water bill from all the extra laundry you have to do. Or the fact that you have to clean out poopy diapers (gross.). So, check out what you have all been waiting for (TBH, if you made it this far just comment and tell me you made it this far so I feel better about myself) the summary:

Pampers Honest Company New Cloth Diapers
Upfront Cost N/A N/A $837.60
Additional Expenses N/A N/A $250.00
Diapers Per Year $737.10 $941.10 N/A
Total Cost (1 Year) $737.10 $941.10 $1,087.60
Total Cost (2 Year) $1,474.20 $1,882.20 $1,337.60

The $250 a year additional expenses for cloth diapers is strictly an estimate. The cloth diapers argument also doesn’t take into account the inconvenience of having to wash diapers every.single.day.

The real winnings of cloth diapers come into effect in the second year and the second child. If you have the discipline to use cloth diapers with the second child you will save a boat-load of money (not a yacht, just a small boat). However, as evidenced by many people I have read about, with the 2nd you care less and less about the cost and more about convenience.

All that being said (a wonderful transition into a conclusion), the decision is yours, but here is a rough estimate of the decision you might be facing. Cheers to diapers!
